Vocab Breakfast: Spalling
A later breakfast posted in the afternoon 4/2/2025
Concrete acting flaky? Brick shedding layers like a sunburn? That’s spalling — the breakup of a masonry surface, often caused by moisture, freeze-thaw cycles, or corroded rebar pushing outward.
Looks a bit like stucco damage? Be careful — stucco doesn’t spall. It cracks. It delaminates. It flakes. But spalling? That’s a word reserved for concrete or hard masonry with something deeper going on.
